Another Chance?

Have you ever reread a book you hated the first time around?

The first time I read Mary Balogh's A SUMMER TO REMEMBER, I hated it. I hated the heroine and didn't believe her worthy of the hero. She was snotty, cold and unlikeable. I didn't quite understand why fans thought the book was one of Balogh's best; didn't understand why ALL ABOUT ROMANCE made it a keeper and gave it an A review. I decided one day to re-read the book and was I ever glad I did. I loved it, loved the lead characters, the supporting characters (especially Joseph, the Marquess of Attinsborough and Viscount Violet Eyes -- any Balogh fans in the house???) LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!

So, since everyone is so into challenges, this is my challenge: reread a book you hated that everyone around you seems to love (by everyone I mean fellow bloggers, AAR, etc) and let me know how your experience went.

LOL, I did that just last week, and with a Balogh, too, Indiscreet. I first read it years and years ago, and it put me off Balogh for some time. This time, I adored it!

I guess some books are just bad...I think our mood at the time the book is read affects our perception...when I'm stressed, I'm more picky and tend to give thumbs down to quite a few books (even those deemed keepers)...

Rosario,
Love your blog...never read INDISCREET...need to check out your review for that. I love Balogh but I really have to be in the right mood for some of her books. SECRET PEARL, for example, is a book I can't read right now because of something I know about the hero...hmmm..

Sunfayrie,
I cannot imagine rereading any of the recent Jane Feather books which IMO totally SUCKED!!! The reviews for her recent books are pretty bad though..I just wonder sometimes why I don't like books deemed to be masterpieces and I get tempted to try them again...

Oh! No I'm going to have to reread a book I didn't like. The problem is, I NEVER finish a book I don't like, and have successfully blocked out titles, authors' names, and characters' names as well.

Off to rummage through old boxes to find a book I didn't like.

Sometimes, it's our experiences that change a read for us. You can pick up a book one year and pick it up the following year and get a totally different reading experience from it because of the way YOU have changed. I teach the same stories every year, and I'm always surprised at how they change from one year to the next.

Great idea! I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!

I'm not sure I can reread a book I hated since if I hated a book it's out the door and I wouldn't even have it anymore, but I'll look for one I didn't like and give it a shot.

this is too funny...it's a book everyone else loves. do you ever get curious as to why you hate a book and others rant and rave about it?
